Using treatment as prevention (U=U)

Individuals who are living with HIV/AIDS and are taking their medication as prescribed may have an undetectable viral load. A person living with HIV is considered to have an ‘undetectable’ viral load when antiretroviral treatment has brought the level of virus in their body to such low levels that blood tests cannot detect it.

U=U: Undetectable = Untransmitable

People who take ART daily as prescribed and achieve and maintain an undetectable viral load have effectively no risk of sexually transmitting the virus to an HIV-negative partner. There is no risk of passing on HIV if your doctor has confirmed that you are undetectable (or virally suppressed), you continue taking your treatment and attend regular viral load monitoring appointments. Being undetectable isn’t a constant state, and if you stop taking your medication then your viral load will go back up again.

Our programs

Project inSPECT

Project inSPECT is a community initiative which reinforces the safety, prevention, education, comprehensive care and treatment provided by the Center. Our mobile testing van and outreach team can be found providing free, rapid HIV testing and PrEP screenings all over Nassau County and Queens. Safer sex workshops are provided to schools and community-based organizations to spread awareness of HIV and STI prevention.

To find out where HIV testing is occurring in your community, please visit us at facebook.com/northwell.health.hiv

To schedule a workshop or inquire about testing opportunities, please call (516) 622-5187.

Project PUSH

Through our unique partnership with Pride For Youth, protecting your sexual health has never been easier. Project PUSH is the only program on Long Island where you can receive full STD screenings (including HIV, syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia testing through blood draws, urine screens and oral/anal swabs) outside of a traditional healthcare setting. Our program is open to all gay, bisexual and queer men, and transgender individuals through age 30. Appointments are available on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month from 3pm - 7pm.

To schedule an appointment, please call (516) 622-5187.

Regional activities

We are involved in various community forums to best serve the needs of our patients and ensure services are as comprehensive as possible. Through Governor Cuomo’s Ending the Epidemic 2020 Initiative, we are able to join forces through Nassau, Suffolk and Queens to provide quality care and a team approach to HIV prevention and treatment.
