The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Cohen Children’s Medical Center is the only PICU on Long Island that provides an onsite attending physician 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Our 37-bed unit is fully monitored and provides leading-edge, critical care for children from infancy through young adulthood.

 Our full-time, multidisciplinary team includes:

  • Pediatric critical care medicine specialists
  • Pediatric cardiothoracic surgeons
  • Cardiologists
  • Pediatric neurosurgeons
  • Pediatric general (including trauma) surgeons
  • Pediatric orthopedic surgeons
  • Pediatric ENT surgeons
  • Pediatric critical care nurse practitioners
  • Pediatric critical care nurses

The PICU averages 2,600 admissions per year and specializes in various levels of pediatric critical care, including:

  • Cardiothoracic surgery
  • Kidney transplantation
  • Neurosurgery
  • Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO)
  • Active cardiopulmonary rescue for patients with severe respiratory failure
  • Patients with severe cardiac dysfunction
  • Patients with conditions such as trauma, infection and postoperative instability
