Pediatric acute respiratory failure

Respiratory failure occurs when not enough oxygen passes from a child's lungs to their blood.

Team members at Cohen Children’s Medical Center are national experts in treating children of all ages with acute and chronic respiratory failure of all kinds. Our clinicians use all types of invasive and noninvasive mechanical ventilation to optimize the care of these children, including the use of high frequency oscillatory ventilation, inhaled nitric oxide and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. The patient's family will be active participants in daily rounds with the care team, and will see firsthand the comprehensive attention paid to all aspects of their child’s care—including sedation management, nutrition and physical therapy—while the child is on mechanical ventilation.

Always raising the standard of care, our PICU physicians are very active in conducting local and multi-institutional clinical research to further the understanding of respiratory failure and how to continue to improve the outcomes of children.
