Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT)
What is continuous renal replacement therapy?
Critically ill patients have much higher metabolic rates than normal as their bodies attempt to recover from disease. They may need a renal replacement therapy that gently removes waste and excess water from the blood. The therapy most commonly used is continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), a slow, continuous form of hemodialysis. The patient’s blood is removed and pumped through a hemofilter, which contains pores that remove waste products and other substances, while keeping in necessary blood cells and proteins.
Our approach
Our PICU is a referral site for children around the region with severe acute kidney injury requiring continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT). As one of the only facilities in the area to offer CRRT, we treat children with a variety of diseases causing life-threatening kidney failure, including sepsis, multiple organ dysfunction syndrome, bone marrow transplantation and extracorporeal life support.
Our dedicated PICU physicians and nurses are specialists in providing all types of CRRT to children of all ages. We are also committed to conducting ongoing clinical research on acute kidney injury, improving our understanding of the disease and how to best treat it.
