Home intravenous antibiotic therapy
We offer home intravenous antibiotic therapy to patients with complex infectious diseases, whenever possible. Through this service, we can administer courses of intravenous antibiotic therapy in the comfort of home, which shortens the amount of time your child needs to be in the hospital—or prevents hospitalization altogether. Children who may benefit from this therapy include those with bone or joint infections, Lyme disease, infections in or around the brain, and infections of the heart (endocarditis).
Under the direction and coordination of the Infectious Diseases faculty, a licensed home care service expert will prepare and deliver a special IV ("PICC line") to your home. It's designed to stay in place for weeks to months and administer the necessary antibiotics. Your child will be medically monitored, and antibiotic dosing will be modified as needed. Any required testing (such as blood tests) will likely be performed in your home for your convenience. We provide 24/7 access to an on-call physician to further support our patients' needs.
