Bringing a baby into the world is a joy. However, when an infant is born with a cleft palate, cleft lip or other facial malformation, it can cause tremendous dismay and anxiety for the parents. Under these circumstances, it’s normal to go through a wide range of emotions and natural to express concern and want answers to important questions about the health of your baby and treatment options.
At the Hagedorn Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Center, we understand your concerns and strive for excellence in the care of infants, children and adolescents with congenital and acquired craniofacial disorders. We take a multidisciplinary approach to providing comprehensive diagnosis and treatment for children with cleft palate, cleft lip or other facial malformations. The caring physicians, surgeons, nurses and health professionals from the departments of plastic surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery, ENT (ear, nose and throat) hearing and speech, and dentistry all work together as a team to ensure the best possible outcome for your child.

Pediatric cleft lip and cleft palate are congenital disorders of the craniofacial complex, which occur in the early part of pregnancy and are present at birth. Pediatric cleft palate occurs when the shelves of the palate fail to meet or fuse together, resulting in an opening in the roof of the mouth. Pediatric cleft lip occurs when the presence of one or two vertical fissures in the upper lip can be on one side only or on both sides resulting from failure of the normal process of lip fusion during embryonic life.
