Center for Minimally Invasive Scoliosis Surgery
About us
The Center for Minimally Invasive Scoliosis Surgery at Cohen Children’s is the foremost treatment center in the world for scoliosis and kyphosis. We are also the only children’s hospital in the region with trained and experienced scoliosis surgeons. Our specialists provide treatment for all types of spinal deformity at any age and of any level of complexity. We offer leading-edge surgical and nonsurgical treatments, including bracing, physical therapy, minimally invasive surgery and magnetically controlled growing system (MAGEC) rod treatment.
Our surgeons are highly experienced, with technical accuracy and results that are unmatched. Our surgical outcomes with respect to infections, curve correction (in all three dimensions) and minimal blood loss are the best in the United States. We lead the field with award-winning research and are on the leading edge of technology. We are the first in the region to offer MAGEC to very young children and are leaders in minimally invasive scoliosis surgery in children.
Our surgeons pioneered this technique in adolescent scoliosis and for children with neuromuscular scoliosis. The correction of scoliosis and surgical accuracy is similar, if not better, to the standard surgery with less pain, faster recovery, smaller scars and fewer to no blood transfusions. Children can go home in three days and are allowed activities as tolerated.
Our model of scoliosis care is unique in the region. We have dedicated anesthesiologists, nursing staff, surgical technicians and a neurologist to ensure safety, efficiency and excellence. Our anesthesiologists utilize blood conservation protocols to decrease the risk of blood transfusions. We employ real-time computerized navigation to confirm accuracy and safety with minimized radiation exposure protocols that we have developed. Our intensive care units ensure the highest level of postoperative care complete with nursing excellence, pain management experts and whisper-quiet private rooms. We can also provide families with free accommodations and can arrange for transportation from the airport or home. Our scoliosis care coordinator will serve as your advocate and guide.
At Cohen Children's, our surgeons are fellowship trained and vastly experienced in pediatric orthopaedics. They are world renowned in subspecialties like spine, sports medicine, hip disorders, neuromuscular disorders like cerebral palsy, spina bifida, Rett syndrome, Marfans and deformities like clubfoot and knock knees. Of course, being a Level I trauma center, we have unmatched capability in childhood and adolescent fractures.
